draft audio

This is my draft for the Audio story I am going to create. My inspiration of course had to follow with the theme of my blog, travel. I choose to use the question “why is travel important to me?”. I choose this question because travel is such a broad subject, I wanted to narrow down on each individuals experience and opinion.

For this draft, I asked my boyfriend to answer the question. (Coincidentally, I am currently visiting him in California, which is why travel was such a great topic for me). He answered the question and them provided an example as to why it is important to him. I liked the format he used, so I decided to answer in the same way to keep the interview organized.

I recorded the interview through the voice memo app on my iPhone. After several takes because the sound wasn’t quite right, I emailed them to myself. My next step was to download them to my computer, so I could use them in Adobe Audition. I created a new file and got the specs to what I wanted for my new file. I added the two tracks in to begin editing.

Some of the edits that I made was fixing the layout. Obviously, I had to start with track 1 being my initial interview with the question “Why is travel important to you?” followed by my boyfriends answer. I realized that if I just put my answer right at the end of his there would be a long silence which wouldn’t sound appeasing to the listener and might draw their attention away. So i cut out most of the silence shortening his interview and moving mine closer to the end of his answer with the move tool.

The next thing I noticed that needed editing was the amount of times we both said “um” in our answers. It made the interview sound less organized, so I wanted to get rid of this. How I did this was, I used the “razor” tool. I put it over the exact spot of the “um” and cut it out. I double checked that I didn’t also cut out any words or make it sound rough. Once I cut it out, I deleted it. This left a space in the audio. I used my move tool to bring the audio together. Afterwards, the audio sounded smooth and there was no “um’s” left, making it sound more professional.

The final step was to upload it to sound cloud and to do this I had to export it to an mp3. All the audio in this draft was recorded by me, so there is no copy right issues.

  1. Your overall audio story is very good and interesting as well! I really like how you interviewed multiple people and the answers were very clear. The only things I would say could improve it, would be adding music and different transitions. I think if you added relaxing music or any song on low volume, it would make it flow more, and it would fill the space where there isn’t a narration. If you didn’t want to add music, you could start the audio with a sound or something like that before you start the interview so it isn’t as abrupt. For the interview itself, you could also cut out some of the pauses between answers or when someone says ‘uh’ or ‘um’. Everything else is really good, and I like the questions and the answers you included!

  2. Your audio story is awesome! I think you nailed it especially because there is literally no background noise at all. Your topic is also very interesting, and I think the way you interpret it, is a good way to do it! There are also many things that goes into conducting a good interview. The interview is something that inspires and intrigues the audience. If I had to critique your post it would be to include a fade into and out of both of your interviews. I feel like that creates a very good and cohesive audio story. Other than that, I think that your story includes every aspect that you need. One thing that I can suggest but I do not think it is crucial is to lead up to your question instead of just stating it at the first part of your draft. Just explain why your topic is valuable to you and your audience. This is an awesome draft!

  3. Hi Holly, my first impression of your audio story is really good! I think it is well thought out and very interesting. If I had to suggest one thing it would be to add in transitions or music of some kind. I think it would really improve the overall quality of the audio story and make it impact the listener a lot better. Also, in your interviews you can hear a couple uh’s and um’s which can throw off the listener as well. You should try using some of the tools in audition to cut them out and make the story flow better. I do like how you interviewed multiple people for your project though, that’s very impressive and not easy to do. Overall I think it has a lot of potential and with a few small tweaks it could be perfect!

  4. After reading other feedback, I realized there was a few tweaks I should make that would make my audio story better. I think that I need I need to add transitions to my audio like music or a fade out. I need to go through the whole audio and get rid of any “um” or “ah” that either myself or boyfriend said without realizing it. Ill use the razor tool to do that. I think I should also add music to the beginning of the interview instead of just starting with the question. When I add music, I will make sure not to make it too loud to where you cant hear the vocal recording. I think I did a good job of speaking loudly and clearly into the voice memo, that way I had more to manipulate with. I also should end with music if I choose to start with it. That way it sounds more organized and put together.
