Reflection Post

My favorite unit this semester was the Adobe Premiere. I really enjoyed both the challenge and fun of this unit. I liked getting to know Premiere for the Final Video. I plan on using my knowledge of Premiere to create personal videos such as videos of my vacations.

For example, I am going to Hawaii over winter break. I want to take a lot of little videos and make a vacation video to remember what I did there. I plan on adding music to the background of the clips and adding text. Those are skills I would only have learned from this course.

The unit I struggled with the most out of this course was Adobe Illustrator. I was very lost during the Illustrator tutorials. The tutorial with the use of blue and red colors, I never understood. I tried my best but don’t think I got the concept. My logo in the end looked fine but I see what other people have managed to do with Illustrator and I am no where near there.

I did struggle with using Premiere though. Manipulating the clips was hard for me. Sometimes the audio wouldn’t work well with the footage and it was hard using markers to adjust the sound.

I think becoming more “tech savy” with all the adobes and creating a blog will be useful to me in the future. By creating this blog, I not only got to start building my online portfolio but learn how to create a website.

I do want to be in Communications for my career and I think that out of all the course works, I would most likely use Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.

I can’t think of any specific things I wish we learned in the class as of right now but I do with that we could spend longer in the Adobe Premiere unit. I want to create more videos and learn even more.

I found the readings for the Photoshop unit very interesting and resourceful. I liked learning about the Unity and Gestalt Theory and the Power of Color. I think it was knowledge that will be really helpful in the future.

I really enjoyed this class. My only regret was not turning in my assignments on time. I always forget to turn in my projects because I would want to turn them in on Sunday not Friday. It sucks to think of the points Ive missed because of late penalties.

I ended up using what I learned from this class to create a project for my COM101 class. I used Adobe Photoshop to create this subvertisement:

final video story

Here is my final video:

For my final video, I ended up starting completely over compared to my draft. I liked the idea of my first draft which was videos from a festival I went to, but there was copy right issues. I decided to make a new video of me narrating how to get the best flight deals.

Steps to Creating the Video:

First, I recorded a video of myself introducing the topic of the video. I did this on my phone and then airdropped it to my computer.

Second: I recorded multiple clips of me using skyscanner, with the view of the camera on my computer. I videoed how I use the website skyscanner.com to find the best deals of flights. I narrated each video as i recorded it. I then airdropped the videos to my computer.

Third: I opened Adobe Premiere and began importing the clips. I dragged them over to the sequence section, where I could then manipulate the video.

Fourth: I arranged the clips in the right order to tell the story. I then added video transitions in between each clip. I choose the “slide” transitions. I added a fade to black at the end of the video so i could put my “film created by Holly Walker” credits in the video.

Fifth: I added music to the end of the video where the credits were. I choose to use the Ascona audio given to us in the Audition tutorials. That way there were no copyright issues.

Sixth: I added a audio transition in between the music and my narration, I did this so there would be a smoother transition between the audio. I found this part to be strangely difficult.

Seventh: I added the text “skyscanner.com” to the video. That way the audience can easily look up what website I am referring and find the right one.

Eighth and Final Step: The final step that I did was to save and export my video. I exported it to a format that Youtube could support. I just mpeg because that is the simplest. I then uploaded it to my youtube account and had to wait 2 hours for it to process and publish.

This was one of the more difficult assignments for me. I struggled at the beginning of this unit with premiere. The layout of premiere was harder than the past Adobes we have used have been. I think there is a lot left for me to learn on premiere and I want to keep using it for personal projects.

Video Story Draft

Here is my video draft:

This project was by far the hardest for me because I had a lot I wanted to fit into the time limit of 1-2 minutes. I decided to use videos and pictures I took from a weekend music festival I went to in Vegas, Life is Beautiful. Since my topic is travel, it worked perfect.

I started with a picture of my boyfriend and I waiting for the set to begin. I wanted to add voice over to explain what was going on in this video story and what the next video was gonna be. I voice recorded myself on voice memos and airdropped it to my computer. I dropped the photo and voice memo in the sequence timeline section of premiere.

I used one long voice memo instead of taking multiple and airdropping them all in. I preferred to do it this way because it would be easier for me to manipulate.

I arranged the videos in the order that I wanted. I made sure to add video transitions in between each clip, so that it made the video smoother and not choppy. I added text to each picture and video of who the clip was about, mostly it was which DJ I was watching at the time. I thought that was important, so that each DJ stood out on their own and it wasn’t meshed into looking like it was one DJ.

The hardest part of this project for me was the audio. I recorded a voice over to go over the music for the video. I had to use audio keyframes to control the volume, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to hear my voice over the music. I had to manipulate every videos’s audio to create like a fade in and fade out for when I wanted a voice over.

At the end of the video I reused the picture from the beginning to talk about Life Is Beautiful a little more. I wanted to add that its not just an EDM festival like my clips make it it seem like. I used the graphics section of premiere to find the perfect credits text to add for a “Created by Holly” and choose the font I liked.

After completing this video to my liking, I saved and exported the video. I then uploaded it to youtube, using the format MPEG. All the videos and pictures were taken by me, so there is no copyright issues.

Premiere Storyboard

Sample Storyboard: Clip 1 and 2

Visual Elements Audio Elements
0:00-0:27  Video of Rachel at her desk for interview, add text of the question asked. Plan on Adding text over video of the question. Rachel answering the question asked by interviewer on what she looks forward to about thanksgiving . Plan on having music fading in and out.
0:-20- Video of blue suitcase being opened and I start backing to go home for break. I pack jeans and t shirts. Plan on making this video longer by packing more things. No audio in this video yet. Planning on adding holiday music, songs about home, or just peaceful music leading into a fade out to the next video.

Next Step:

I want to add two more videos of people talking about thanksgiving break and traveling home.

Video of someone rolling a suitcase.

And possibly video shot by me of a plan landing for the end of the story in the future.

FINAL AUDIO STORY

This is my final for the Audio story I created. My inspiration of course had to follow with the theme of my blog, travel. I choose to use the question “why is travel important to me?”. I choose this question because travel is such a broad subject, I wanted to narrow down on each individuals experience and opinion.

For this story, I asked my boyfriend to answer the question. (Coincidentally, I am currently visiting him in California, which is why travel was such a great topic for me). He answered the question and them provided an example as to why it is important to him. I liked the format he used, so I decided to answer in the same way to keep the interview organized.

I recorded the interview through the voice memo app on my iPhone. After several takes because the sound wasn’t quite right, I emailed them to myself. My next step was to download them to my computer, so I could use them in Adobe Audition. I created a new file and got the specs to what I wanted for my new file. I added the two tracks in to begin editing.

Some of the edits that I made was fixing the layout. Obviously, I had to start with track 1 being my initial interview with the question “Why is travel important to you?” followed by my boyfriends answer. I realized that if I just put my answer right at the end of his there would be a long silence which wouldn’t sound appeasing to the listener and might draw their attention away. So i cut out most of the silence shortening his interview and moving mine closer to the end of his answer with the move tool.

The next thing I noticed that needed editing was the amount of times we both said “um” in our answers. It made the interview sound less organized, so I wanted to get rid of this. How I did this was, I used the “razor” tool. I put it over the exact spot of the “um” and cut it out. I double checked that I didn’t also cut out any words or make it sound rough. Once I cut it out, I deleted it. This left a space in the audio. I used my move tool to bring the audio together. Afterwards, the audio sounded smooth and there was no “um’s” left, making it sound more professional.

The final revision to my draft that I made was adding music to the story. I started with adding music at the beginning of the story, I messed with the volume to add a fade out before my interview began. Then i cut the vocal track in half in between the answers and added the same music to show where one tape ended and the other began. I had to add a fade in and fade out to this part, to make it sound smoother. Finally, I added music to the end. All the same song, just different parts of it based off what I wanted the story to sound like.

The final step was to upload it to sound cloud and to do this I had to export it to an mp3. All the audio in this draft was recorded by me except the music I added which I got from the Audition tutorials, therefore they are free to use.

FINAL LOGO PROJECT

For my final draft of the logo, I made a few changes that I think made the final look the best. For starter, to make the logo look less busy I started off with editing the outer rim of the logo. I changed it from pink to black and made it thicker to get rid of any part of the design that went a little out of the logo.

I got rid of the mountains because I couldn’t quite get them to look right. I added more palm trees to the bottom of the photo to still take up space. I made sure that none of the leaves or the stumps went out of the rim.

I then made some adjustments to the plane. I thought that since the plane and background were white, I needed to change the color of the plane. I decided to make the plane grey, and kept the yellow on the tip of the plane.

The final change I made was to make the text even more warped. By doing this, the text fits the oval rim better. After all the edits, I think the logo looks more organized and less cluttered.
